A majority of British women were worried about hair loss

British women “are in the grip of a hair loss pandemic”, with three-quarters admitting that they are really worried about suffering from it in the future, a new survey reveals.

More than 40% – and 77% specifically in London – are currently experiencing hair loss and thinning.

Those who fight it feel self-conscious (52%), less confident (42%), embarrassed (35%) and less feminine (31%), the study of 2,000 UK women’s hair and scalp specialists. Philip Kingsley find.

And this affects women’s daily lives, with even 90% thinking about hair loss at least a few times a day, 40% hesitating to go to social events with friends, and more than half (55%) saying they would avoid taking their photo.

In particular, 30% of respondents feel that hair thinning affects them the most. This is followed by visible scalp (20%), and seeing excess hair, such as on the floor, pillow or in the shower (19%).

Nearly three-quarters (73%) believe that stress is the reason they have problems with their hair. Meanwhile, 33% feel that dye is the biggest contributor, and 23% say that the ingredients in the shampoo they use do not help the full potential of their hair.

But British women are doing what they can to try to fight it. About 32% used certain special shampoos, 25% took supplements daily and 22% tried scalp massage – but only 44% saw results.

In addition to products, while more than half (51%) note that nutrition also plays a role in their hair care routine, 23% still have no idea that what they put into their body is internal to a hair conditioner.

“Hair loss in women has always been a common problem,” says Anabel Kingsley, Philip Kingsley Brand President and Trichologist. “But the problems have been exacerbated in recent years due to huge psychological and physical stresses including Covid-19, the current pressures experienced by women, women not having time to prioritize self-care, and women not having their health prioritized. By others.”

All of these factors have had a negative impact on hair growth and daily hair loss, “added Kingsley.

With hair “non-essential for physical survival”, Kingsley explains that this means that it is “the ultimate and unfiltered reflection of our nutritional status and overall well-being”.

“I see so many women experiencing hair loss resulting from dietary deficiencies that have come from self-deprivation, not feeding themselves on balanced, fresh and healthy meals, and also from misinformation about what healthy eating looks like,” she adds.

“I also consult women weekly with an undiagnosed and untreated deficiency of Iron, Ferritin, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D and / or hormonal imbalances that worsen both discarding and density changes.”

On top of that, she says, “women feel pressured to have-everything and do everything, sending cortisol levels rocket – which affects the growth and health of their strand” and that “ultimately, the perfect storm for hair loss has occurred.”

And, despite density changes in hair occurring throughout a woman’s life, such as postpartum and menopause, this type of change was only considered by 42% of British women, despite 73% noting that they saw differences in the density of their hair. .

Alopecia is the general medical term for hair loss. Although it is usually not something to be worried about, it can sometimes be a sign of illness. Some types can be persistent, such as male and female baldness, which usually works in the family.

Like stress, hair loss can be caused by illness, cancer treatment, weight loss and weight loss, according to the NHS.
