An extraordinary council meeting called over South Hams bins chaos

An extraordinary meeting of South Hams District Council was called due to the continuing chaos of garbage collection. The special meeting will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday.

The brown bin was suspended last August without notice. The council has announced that the service will resume at the end of March this year.

Since then, 10,000s of collections have been missed. In a few days no rubbish was collected at all.

Garbage services in South Hams were outsourced to a private contractor, FCC Environment, but the service was plagued by problems from the start, including missed collections, vehicles being too large for some areas, and further hampered by the national shortage of HGV drivers. .

The FCC has previously apologized to residents for its failures, blaming residents for the increased volumes resulted in the recycling depot filling up, making the unloading of collection vehicles and the subsequent operations “much more complex”.

The Liberal Democrats at SHDC forced an extraordinary meeting of the full council. Under Council Procedure Rule 3.1 (f), five members of the council requested that a special meeting of a full council be convened. They requested the presence of a representative of the FCC, the council’s garbage collection contractor, to report to members on its performance in the delivery of the garbage service followed by questions and answers.

Cllr Julian Brazil, a Liberal Democrat group leader, said: “Local people have been suffering for more than two and a half years – they are angry and frustrated. If you pay for a service, you expect to have it delivered.

“Outsourcing was a disaster and the reaction of the leadership at South Hams District Council ranged from non-existent to silly. Local people completely lost confidence in the council.

“Again we will call on the council to terminate the contract and bring the service back home. In 2018 we were the second best local authority in the whole country, now we are the worst. The average municipal tax in South Hams is the highest in Duty and residents deserve better. “

A South Hams District Council spokesman said: “The council took legal advice and wrote to the FCC urging them to make the situation a priority. The situation has been going on for too long and it urgently needs a resolution for residents. as soon as they can.

“At all stages, the council has tried to work with the contractor to improve and resolve the situation.”

An FCC Environment spokesman said: “FCC Environment understands the frustration and frustration of South Hams residents over the continued disruption of garbage and recycling services. We would like to sincerely apologize for the failure to deliver the service you expect and deserve.

“In particular, we would like to forgive the difficulties experienced with the reintroduction of the garden waste collection service. There are reasons for this, but we want to clarify that when the service was launched, we recruited enough employees required by the contract to deliver the service. We have not been able to replace them and we have not been able to replace them. reliable service.

“At all stages, the FCC has sought to work with the council to improve and resolve the situation and this remains the case. We are fully committed to ensuring that everyone has a garden waste collection service fairly regularly while the ongoing issues are resolved. In addition, we look at how we can adjust our collection circles to make sure that the same households are not missed every time. “
