In 2014 David was on the verge of becoming a gentleman on the New Year’s Honor Roll until a “red flag” warning from HM Revenue and Customs dropped his appointment.

The former footballer was one of dozens of wealthy celebrities who invested in the controversial Ingenious Media scheme to fund films and reduce the personal tax of investors. HMRC labeled the scheme a tax evasion vehicle.

But a source now told the publication: ‘David, like many of the celebrities involved with Ingenious, didn’t know what was going on at the time.

‘His team first took the initiative to approach HMRC almost two years ago, when David became independent in his business, and then finally arranged everything, once and for all, this year.’

They continued: “In 2013 David was told that the only reason he was overlooked for chivalry was because of the tax failure. Now it is explained, there is absolutely no reason for him not to be honored.

‘He would obviously be quite thrilled by the chivalry – but don’t get excited and believe it only when he sees it.’
