Edinson Cavani is definitely the two “outstanding” Man Utd players this season

Edinson Cavani has considered Manchester United’s disappointing 2021/22 season before leaving the club next month and has chosen two impressive performers.

Edinson Cavani believe Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea was Manchester United the two best players of this season, despite the “inconsistent” team.

United recorded their lowest ever Premier League point count to come sixth in the highest flight ending a fifth consecutive campaign without any silverware. The team struggled under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick and is now being reviewed by Erik ten Hag this summer.

Cavani is one of several players who have endured a difficult season personally, with injuries limiting his impact. The 35-year-old striker has managed just two goals and two assists in 20 appearances across all competitions and, like many of his teammates, will leave the club after his contract expires in late June.

Before he left, the Uruguayan striker was asked to consider the season and choose the club’s best performer. He told the club website : “I think the outstanding player for us this season, and someone who has shown a little more consistency, playing well regularly and always being there for us, has been a Christian.

“I think that apart from having a short period when he wasn’t entering on the score, which can happen when you’re a striker, Cristiano was probably our one player who showed the most consistency.

“After him comes David, because he was also one of the most consistent players in the squad, so together, they were the most consistent and best players in the squad of our season this time.”

Ronaldo finished the season as United’s top scorer, with 24 goals in 38 appearances. While his scoring skills were never questioned, his lack of pressure was often called into question, especially following Rangnick’s arrival. The 37-year-old has another year on his United contract and is ready to stay and work under Ten Hag next season.

United finished the season with a goal difference of 0, conceding 57 to nullify their goals scored. Despite their leaky defense, which struggled during the campaign under the leadership of Harry Maguire, De Gea continued to manage to get out of the season with credit in the bank. The Spaniard was busy on goal in his 11th year with the club and could be rewarded with a contract extension until June 2025, according to reports.

Overall, however, it was a miserable season for United and Cavani was frustrated by the team’s inability to put together a run of results. “I think overall, this season, the team has been a little inconsistent throughout the entire campaign,” he added. “I don’t think we’ve ever managed to find that … as you would say it … that consistency throughout the season, whether it’s in the group as a whole, or also on an individual basis.

“Sometimes it was due to injuries, other times it was down to the declines in form we can experience as players. But I think it was an inconsistent season for us, very inconsistent, in every sense of the word I believe.”
