By taking proactive steps, Etihad Rail and Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) have ensured the highest sustainability standards in the construction of the UAE’s national rail network, a senior official said.

Marking World Environment Day, Khuloud Al Mazrouei, deputy project manager at Etihad Rail, said the partnership with EAD resulted in the implementation of sustainable environmental management during the planning and construction of the 1,200 km railway project. While the first stage of the network has been in operation since 2016, the second stage is completed by more than 75 percent.

“Since the early stages of the project, we have collaborated on a range of initiatives, including conservation, animal protection and replanting of trees and shrubs throughout Abu Dhabi, preserving the UAE’s pristine and diverse natural heritage. Achieving the highest environmental standards and preserving the UAE’s diverse natural heritage, animals have been transported from the Misanad Nature Reserve, through which the planned route of the national railway runs, to other suitable and protected habitats.

“Misanad Nature Reserve is home to a range of wildlife species, including snakes, Cheeseman’s Gerbils, scorpions and pigeons. Etihad Rail has now relocated more than 300 animals, including 242 Middle Eastern Short-toed Geckos, 24 Baluch Rock Geckos, five Sawdust Vipers, etc. We have also incorporated the design and construction of canals and natural crossings that allow the animals move under the track safely. “

Mazrouei was warned that all necessary precautionary measures had been taken in the event of an unforeseen spill.
