WTA Nottingham Day 1 Forecasts Including Vekic vs. Dart

The grass court swing starts seriously on the first day at the WTA Nottingham Open with four interesting matches on the schedule in the English Midland. As always, we here at LWOT will offer our predictions for each match on the schedule. But who will reserve their place in the second round?

WTA Nottingham Day 1 Forecasts

Donna Vekic v. Harriet Dart

Head-to-head: first meeting

Donna Vekic has the advantage in terms of experience coming into this match and solid grass. But the Croatian has struggled for form and fitness lately as her rank has dropped from career-high world number 19 to 90.th in the positions. Harriet Dart, meanwhile, entered the top 100 for the first time in her career earlier in the season, but later slipped to 114.th. She also lost her first grass field match of the season last week to Nikola Kostic.

That continued a miserable form for the Briton, who has lost seven matches in a row since reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells. If Vekic wasn’t at her best lately, she was in better shape than that and impressed by coming through the qualifying round to reach the second round at Roland Garros. She will have to adapt to the different requirements of grass tennis, but this seems like a good time to play Dart.

Forecast: Vekic in 3

Heather Watson v. Katie Volynets

Head-to-head: Watson 1-0 Volynets

Heather Watson was beaten quite comfortably in the first round at the French Open by French joker Elsa Jacquemot, but the Briton usually saves her best tennis for the grass field season on home soil. Katie Volynets, meanwhile, has made slow but steady progress as she adjusts to life as a traveling professional and won her first match at Major a fortnight ago when she upset Victoria Golubic in the first round at the French Open.

She was unable to support that against Elena Rybakina, however, losing 4-6 0-6 and she was then beaten 6-4 6-4 by Lulu Radovcic in the first round in Surbiton. With Watson certainly having the crowd behind her and with considerably more experience on grass tennis than Volynets, this could be a difficult day at the office for the 20-year-old American. Don’t be surprised if this one goes the distance, but wait for Watson to have the edge.

Zhu Lin v. Jodie Burrage

Head-to-head: Burrage 1-0 Zhu

Jodie Burrage was in indifferent form to say the least on the clay, but she looked to play with renewed confidence last week on the meadows in Surbiton. The Briton reached the semifinals beating, among others, Zhu Lin on the way. That may be a more competitive thing, where Zhu had a chance to adapt to the grass, but Burrage looked very sharp in Surbiton and clearly enjoys playing on grass. Zhu, on the other hand, generally struggled on the surface, although she reached the second round at Wimbledon last season. However, with Burrage certainly full of faith, expect her to have too much for Zhu again.

Forecast: Burrage in 3

Oceane Dodin vs Tereza Martincova

Head-to-head: first meeting

Neither Oceane Dodin nor Tereza Martincova seem particularly suited to field tennis, but that may well serve to make this match more entertaining no less. They are at least relatively well matched, with Martincova the higher ranked of the two but Dodin boasts the best record in 2022. Dodin comes into this match after a daunting first-round loss at the French Open against Andrea Petkovic, but she has succeeded. the semi-finals in Strasbourg a week earlier.

Martincova also crashed out in the first round at the French Open, losing 3-6 4-6 to Shelby Rogers. She has a better record on the grass than Dodin, however, and reached the third round at Wimbledon last year. Dodin, by contrast, made the main draw at the Championships only once failing to pass the qualifying three years in a row. There is still time for Dodin to improve his grass skills, but wait for Martincova to have the advantage here.

Prediction: Martincova in 3
